Satish Gujral was born in 1925, in Jhelum, a part of pre-partition Punjab. Gujral’s artistic inclination blossomed in childhood, and then he honed his skills at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore, followed by a brief stint at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay.
While the Progressive Artists’ Group crossed his path, he developed his own trail in pursuit of an indigenous modern artistic expression, a journey he embarked upon with determination.
The personal upheavals he faced, stemming from his hearing loss—an affliction that he overcame after sixty-two years through surgery—and the turmoil of Partition, which compelled his family’s migration to India, etched deep marks on Gujral’s artistic consciousness. These experiences resonated profoundly in some of his most iconic creations.
The artist delved into the depths of history and nuance, channelling an expressionist grandeur of gesture and space. He was a master of creating modern art without disturbing its tradition, for there lingers the real beauty of any art.
