Paresh Maity

Paresh Maity was known for his rugged palette and versatility in color and texture treatment. He was honored with India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2014. Over forty years, Maity has held 81 solo exhibitions.

In his early years, he created many watercolors depicting various locations, gradually transitioning from atmospheric sceneries to human forms. His recent works are bold and graphic, characterized by strong colors and unusual cropping. His art is featured in numerous prestigious collections, including the British Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. Notably, he painted India’s longest painting, spanning over 850 feet.

In August 2010, Maity’s 55th solo exhibition opened at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, showcasing watercolors inspired by the last 15 poems of Rabindranath Tagore, “Shesh Lekha” (The Last Writings, 1941). He has held exhibitions at renowned galleries such as Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, Gallerie Ganesha in New Delhi, and Gallery Katayun in Kolkata. Additionally, he has participated in various group shows, including the National Art Exhibition in Jaipur, Kala Mela at Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi, and the Citibank Group Show in Mumbai.
